  • NIH Fiscal Operations Plan for FY2011

NIH has published a Guide Notice explaining the funding levels in the new budget. The Notice provides clarification to the guidance of the NIH Fiscal Operations Plan for FY 2011 and implementation of the Department of Defense and Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act of 2011 (P.L. 112-10) that was announced in NOT-OD-11-068. Non-Competing Research Awards for All NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) Except the National Cancer Institute (NCI): -The FY 2011 appropriation level reduces funding from FY 2010 levels and thus warrants reductions in commitment levels for NIH research grants. -Non-modular research grants, from all ICs, with the single exception of NCI, will be reduced to 1% below the FY 2010 award level. Future year commitments will be adjusted for inflation based on this revised FY 2011 level, taking into account the policy assumption in the FY 2012 President’s Budget. -Modular grants will be reduced to 1% below the FY 2010 level and may be reduced by an inflationary adjustment level set by each Institute or Center (up to the level set by that Institute or Center for non-modular research grants). -The adjusted FY2011 award level will also be the new base for future year commitments. Non-Competing Research Awards for NCI: -For NCI, Non-modular research grants will be reduced to 3% below the FY 2010 award level. -Future year commitments will be adjusted for inflation based on this revised FY 2011 level, taking into account the policy assumption in the FY 2012 President’s Budget. -Modular grants will be reduced to 3% below the FY 2010 level.

  • Funding Search Tip - LikeThis Tool in eRA Commons

FAQ on LikeThis: A. What is LikeThis and who is it available to? LikeThis is a new eRA search tool used to assist PIs in finding and learning about other research projects with similar goals and objectives as their own. By entering specific scientific terms or accessing their own grant applications or grants and clicking on LikeThis, investigators will be provided a listing of similar funded projects and/or publications. The LikeThis tool is available to Principal Investigators (PIs) registered in eRA Commons and is accessed as a link in eRA Commons once an individual is logged in. B. How can LikeThis assist me? LikeThis provides a powerful and integrated search tool in a user friendly interface. With the ability to find similar projects and publications, PIs can more quickly and efficiently: --find out new ideas for research based on what NIH has awarded in the past; --see what NIH is doing in his or her area of interest; --use the information as a decision tool to determine if they need to come up with a fresh research idea; and --figure out in which study section his or her application should be reviewed. For example, you may enter scientific text from your grant application into LikeThis (the data remains confidential) to find similar grants, including the name of the NIH funding Institute as well as a list of the study sections where these were reviewed. Alternatively, you can access your previously funded or unfunded grants from the "My Applications" tab in LikeThis to find similarly funded grants. C. What steps should I follow for locating Institute and Study Section in similar grants, using LikeThis? 1. Log in to eRA Commons: https://commons.era.nih.gov/commons/ 2. From the home page, click on the link for LikeThis (under Additional Links on the right side of the screen.) 3. Click on the LikeThis graphic to enter the system. 4. You will see two tabs: My Scientific Text or My Applications. 5. On the Scientific Text tab, enter a title in Proposed Project Title. This field is optional. 6. Enter or paste scientific text into the Scientific Description/Scientific Aims text box. 7. Click Submit. 8. The system displays a listing of similar funded projects and publications, as well as scientific terms, on separate tabs. D. What if I would like to locate similar grants using my own applications or grants? 1. On the My Applications tab, locate the application for which you want to view similar funded projects and publications. 2. Select the LikeThis link in the corresponding LikeThis column. Applications from fiscal year 2007 onwards appear on the list. E. What's on the horizon for LikeThis? The LikeThis tool is currently available to PIs only. Following the July 19-20 software release, the tool will be made available to Institutional Signing Officials as well as others with eRA Commons roles such as Trainee, Post Doc and Assistant. F. Where can I find out more information about LikeThis? To discover additional features of LikeThis, go to the Overview, User Guide and FAQs. You may also send your feedback or questions to the LikeThis mailbox. All of which can be found at http://era.nih.gov/services_for_applicants/like_this/likethis.cfm.

  • RFA-RM-16-006: NIH Director's Early Independence Awards (DP5)

Slots: Two LOI: August 12, 2016 Internal Deadline: June 17, 2016, 5pm External Deadline: September 12, 2016, 5pm Award Information: Type: Grant Estimated Number of Awards: 10 Anticipated Amount: $4,000,000 Awards will be for up to $250,000 in direct costs per year, plus applicable Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs. Cost Sharing: This FOA does not require cost sharing as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement. Submission Process: PIs must submit their application as a Limited Submission through the Office of Research Application Portal: (CLOSED) Materials to submit: • Single Page Proposal Summary (0.5” margins; single-spaced; font type: Arial, Helvetica, or Georgia typeface; font size: 11 pt.). • CV – (5 pages maximum) Who May Serve as PI: At the time of application, the individual either 1) within the preceding twelve months must have received a terminal doctoral degree or completed medical residency or 2) within the following twelve months must complete all the requirements for a doctoral degree or complete a medical residency. The clinical fellowship period is NOT included in the clinical residency or equivalent training period. The date of degree receipt is that which appears on the official transcript for the degree. The time of application is the date when the application is submitted electronically to NIH through Grants.gov. In addition, at the time of application, the PD/PI must not have served as a post-doctoral fellow following a previous doctoral degree for more than one year. At the time of award to the sponsoring Institution, either 1) the Early Independence investigator must have received a PhD, MD, DO, DC, DDS, DVM, OD, DPM, ScD, EngD, Dr PH, DNSc, ND (Doctor of Naturopathy), PharmD, DSW, PsyD, or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution (it is the responsibility of the sponsoring institution to determine if a foreign doctoral degree is equivalent), or 2) an authorized official of the degree-granting institution must certify that all degree requirements have been met and that the date of graduation as appearing on the transcript will be within one year of the date of application submission. In addition, the candidate must not already be a PD/PI on an NIH R01 or R01-equivalent award. Purpose: The NIH Director’s Early Independence Awards provide an opportunity for exceptional junior scientists to accelerate their entry into an independent research career by forgoing the traditional post-doctoral training period. Though most newly graduated doctoral-level researchers would benefit by post-doctoral training, a small number of outstanding junior investigators would benefit instead by launching directly into an independent research career. For these select investigators, who have established a record of scientific innovation and research productivity and who have demonstrated unusual leadership, drive, and maturity, post-doctoral training would unnecessarily delay their entry into performing independent research. The NIH Director’s Early Independence Awards also provide an opportunity for institutions to invigorate their research programs by bringing in the fresh perspectives of the awardees that they host. By the end of the award period, the Early Independence investigator is expected to be competitive for continued funding of his/her research program and for a permanent research position. Institutionally Limited Submission webpage for updates and other announcements.
