ISI researcher John Tran, also known as Captain John J. Tran, California National Guard Ready Reservist, finished five years in the Computational Services Division with a martial flourish.
Tran, a parallel systems analyst who worked on numerous projects with Bob Lucas and Dan Davis, will become a full-time PhD candidate.
ISI’s Mary Hall, a research associate professor in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering department of computer science, will be Tran’s advisor.
Tran’s work at ISI was interrupted last year, when he did a one-year recall to full time active duty to work on the Whitehouse Communications Upgrade project in Washington, D.C.
To honor his service and start off his PhD studies with a drum-roll, ISI received a visit from his commanding officer, LtCol Victor Adame, California Air National Guard, the Commander of the 261st Combat Communication Squadron in Van Nuys. John plans to continue to serve with that unit as a Ready Reservist.
Colonel Adame, a 31-year service veteran, presented both Bob Lucas and ISI executive director Herbert Schorr with what Davis called “tokens of appreciation” for Bob’s and Herb’s support of Tran’s service. One of those tokens, a 261st Unit t- shirt, can be seen in the accompanying image. Both men were also presented with a 261st Unit medallion.
Schorr paid tribute to Tran’s good work at ISI and with the Air Force, and wished him good luck in his studies.
