John O’Brien
ISI Executive Director Herb Schorr has announced that Viterbi School Senior Associate Dean John O’Brien will be working closely with — and frequently at — the USC Information Sciences Institute.
“I am pleased to announce the appointment of John O’Brien … as a resource to my administration and the faculty and staff of the Institute, effective immediately. This appointment has the approval and the support of Dean Yortsos of the Viterbi School,” wrote Schorr in a memo to ISI faculty and staff.”John will spend part of his time at ISI and the remaining time at the Viterbi School … where he is responsible for the Office for Admissions and Students Affairs and the Office for Graduate Affairs. In his ISI affiliation he will work closely with my staff to  provide advice on both daily and strategic issues and will also act as a resource to the ISI faculty and staff on various issues, including academic, research and administration.
“Dr. O’Brien is Professor of Electrical Engineering-Electrophysics. He received a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1991, from Iowa State University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1993 and 1996, respectively.
“He joined USC in 1997 as Assistant Professor. Â In 1999 he received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, and in 2000 was awarded an NSF Career Award. Â John was promoted to Professor of Electrical Engineering in 2006. Â His research interests are in nanophotonics and photonic crystal devices.
