Beach Boys’ iconic album reimagined as anthem for a new generation of USC Viterbi engineers

This past May, the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds, arguably one of the greatest rock albums of all time, celebrated its 50th anniversary. To commemorate this major milestone in pop culture, we’re tipping our hats off to that unmistakable 60’s surf sound with a new song: SCilicon Beach.

Fifty years ago, the Beach Boys captured the feeling of Southern California with songs about fast cars and surfing. In honor of this, the USC Viterbi School wondered, “In 2016, what songs would the Beach Boys write about Silicon Beach?”

And thus, a homage of sorts: in collaboration with graduate students from the USC Thornton School of Music, we imagined a new song, in the spirit of Pet Sounds – a veritable anthem for Silicon Beach (which we have re-christened SCilicon Beach), a place where engineers, the rock stars of the 21st century, want to be. The hottest place for start-ups, for innovators, for the engineers who want to change the world.
