Lucio Soibelman, chair of the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was appointed Dean’s Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The announcement was made by Dean Yannis C. Yortsos on January 2, stating that, “this appointment recognizes Lucio’s exceptional distinction as a professor in the Sonny Astani Department.”
Soibelman received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and his PhD in civil engineering systems from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 2012, he joined USC as professor and chair of the Sonny Astani Department.
He has over 200 publications and has received research funding from numerous institutions, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy (DOE) and the US Army. He served as chief editor of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Computing in Civil Engineering Journal for eight years, receiving the 2016 ASCE Richard R. Torrens Award in recognition of his contributions to the journal. In 2011, he was awarded the Fiatech Celebration of Engineering and Technology Innovation (CETI) Outstanding Researcher. In 2010, he received the American Council on Education Award and the ASCE Computing in Civil Engineering Award.
The appointment was recommended by a faculty committee and approved by the Provost.
