David Barnhart, ISI Mellon Mentor
David Barnhart, director of the Aerospace Technology and Systems Center at ISI, was one of six 2008 USC-Mellon Mentoring Award winners.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation administers the awards, trying to foster a university-wide culture of mentoring. It reviews a list of nominees and chooses as recipients in three mentoring areas ( faculty to faculty, faculty to graduate, and faculty to undergraduate) those who have demonstrated consistent ability to offer valuable counsel and sound advice.The Viterbi School of Engineering two mentoring winners in each of the categories, including Barnhart’s undergrad award.
Mentors must also generously share time and resources, helpfully to critique the work of their students or colleagues, and also serve as advocates for those individuals.
Barnhart has worked for two years on the Leapfrog project, helping a team of undergraduates build and test a model lunar lander. (See recent ISI story)
