James De La Rosa (1961) James (Jim) De La Rosa '61 (EE) is a retired Aerospace Engineer, holding a BSEE from USC Class of 1961. He stands as the first generation American to attend college in his family, though not the first to graduate. De La Rosa attended UCLA from 1949 to 1950, then USC from 1957 to the summer of 1960. Throughout most of these years, he worked full time on radar systems at Hughes Aircraft Company in Culver City, CA, transitioning to the role of Design Engineer during his last semester. He then embarked on a seventeen-year tenure as a Research Engineer at North American Aviation Missile Division in Downey, CA. During this extensive career, De La Rosa had the privilege of contributing significantly to pivotal aerospace endeavors. He spent four years on the design of the first Cruise Missile fielded by the Air Force during the Cold War with Russia in the 1960s, followed by five years on the Apollo Program, where he played a key role in designing the Apollo Space Capsules that ferried astronauts to the moon and back safely. Subsequently, he dedicated eight years to assisting in the design of the Space Shuttle. De La Rosa's literary contribution includes the book "Building the Apollo Capsules," published by McFarland Publishing on October 6. Through this work, he aims to inspire Hispanic students to pursue studies in science or engineering. His involvement in the Apollo project from 1964 to 1969, aimed at landing American astronauts on the moon before the end of the 1960s, forms a significant backdrop to the narrative. The book delves into the untold story of the Apollo missions, revealing behind-the-scenes events, fabrication procedures, and the individuals involved in building the iconic Apollo Capsules. De La Rosa highlights the contributions of Hispanic engineers and workers in both the design and manufacturing processes of the capsules that carried Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins to the moon. Additionally, De La Rosa provides insight into his book cover design, courtesy of his publisher. For more information about his book, interested individuals can visit McFarland Publishing's webpage at https://www.mcfarlandbooks.com/product/Building-the-Apollo-Capsules/. James De La Rosa, BSEE '61, remains a notable figure in aerospace history. Submitted: 2024-03-05

Dr. Philip A. Iannuzzi, Jr. (1989) "Viterbi alum steers a lifelong journey of leadership and learning: from cadet to aerospace industry leader . . . with a devotion to continued education along the way." Phillip Iannuzzi MS '89 (ISSM) interest in a life of leadership and learning began as a college student and Air Force ROTC cadet at Penn State University. That interest led him to pursue a career in the Air Force as an officer and pilot (1984-2008) followed by a career in the aerospace industry with The Boeing Company (2008-2023). He also served as an adjunct faculty instructor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (2010-2012). A career in the military, aerospace industry, and higher education provided opportunities for this 1989 USC alum to serve in a diverse range of leadership roles, from first-level to executive, while pioneering a lifelong path of continued education. Serving as an Air Force officer and pilot, Philip A. Iannuzzi, Jr., commanded, directed, flew, and led combat and combat support missions around the globe, including air power missions over Saudi Arabia during the 1991 Gulf War, NATO’s peace-keeping campaign in Kosovo following the 1999 war against Serbia, and the allied air campaign over Afghanistan and Iraq in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks against the U.S. Prior to retiring as a colonel, Iannuzzi’s assignments included serving as a major command division chief, Pentagon program manager, director of NATO’s international joint operations center, director of global flight operations, and commander of four deployed KC-10 Extender flying squadrons. As a Boeing Company aircrew training center site leader, Iannuzzi led a team of pilot and loadmaster instructors, staff, and maintainers providing ground and flight simulator training to U.S. and international C-17 Globemaster aircrew members. As a senior Boeing training operations leader, he led teams of technical experts located at Boeing production sites across the U.S. responsible for the design, development, delivery, and maintenance of industry- and government-regulated aerospace certification and qualification programs. Serving as a senior educational leader supporting Boeing’s defense, space, and security executive leaders, his team provided workforce development strategies and learning solutions for over 33,000 aerospace professionals. After earning a bachelor of science degree in business from Penn State (1984), education opportunities paved the way for a life of learning, yielding four masters’ degrees and a doctoral degree. He earned his first master’s degree in 1989 from USC, a master of science in systems management, then went on to complete three additional masters’ degrees through full-time, in-residence graduate schools. Those degrees include a master’s in operations management from the Air Force Institute of Technology (1996), master’s in military operations from Air University’s Air Command and Staff College (2000), and master’s in global strategic studies from Air University’s Air War College (2004). He completed a doctoral degree in educational leadership in residence at Delaware Valley University (2020). Dr. Iannuzzi’s awards include the National Defense Transportation Association’s Memorial Medal for Literary Merit (1999), Air University’s Orvil A. Anderson Leadership Research Literary Award (2004), The Boeing Company’s corporate Functional Excellence Award (2012), and Citation of Honor from the Council of the City of Philadelphia (2020). Military service awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and Air Medal. Submitted: 2024-02-28

Robert P. Thompson (1945) In 1943, Robert P. Thompson, '45 BSME, was ordered by the U.S. Navy to report to USC to join the V-12 contingent. A child of the great depression, Thompson had only dreamed of ever being able to attend there. He studied hard; joined in with fraternity and extra-courricular activities; graduated; and went on to become an officer in the U.S. Navy. The highlight of his career was participation as Target Coordination Officer on one of many target vessels - the USS Banner in Operation Crossroads, where he participated in the two atom bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. Upon separation form the Navy he joined North American Aviation's new Aerophysics Laboratory (the for-runner of Rocketdyne and others). Thompson became an early expert in liquid fueled rocket engines from the modified German V-2 to the engines used on the Atlas, Redstone, Jupiter missiles and others. The highlight of his rocket engine career was leading the preliminary analysis and design of the Huge F-1 engine, five of which were used on the Apollo moon exploration missions. Eventually he went to work for JPL in the 1960's. Thompson played a critical role in the success of the first Mars Flyby - Mariner 4 and later the Viking Mars lander, and Voyagers I and II. Having evolved into engineering management he eventually formed an early power wheelchair company, Solo Products, Inc. When that company was sold he retired to a life made possible by a great education at the university of his dreams. Meanwhile, one of Thompson's sons and grandsons also became mechanical engineers. His son published a story from his life titled "A Space Pioneer" available on Amazon. Submitted: 2017-08-09

Douglas Thiessen (1983) Douglas A. Thiessen, P.E., D.P.E., M.ASCE, '83 BSCE, is the Managing Director of Engineering for the Port of Long Beach. Recently he presented an abstract he co-authored entitled “Owner, Operator, Engineer: A Joint Approach for the Design, Construction, and Start-Up of the Long Beach Middle Harbor Automated Container Terminal” at the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Ports 2016 conference in New Orleans. The planning, development, and start-up of North America’s most advanced and environmentally responsible “green” automated terminal required a level of team collaboration unlike that of previous large terminal project deliveries in the United States to date. The challenges crossed typical boundaries of engineering, technology, and equipment manufacturing, which, in the past, were not at issue with the design prerogatives of conventional marine container terminals. Unlike traditional port development whereby a terminal is built with discrete wharf, buildings, container yard, rail yard, and gate, the automated Middle Harbor terminal features are fully integrated and linked electronically. The terminal’s operating system manages all features of the facility’s equipment and productivity; therefore, during development no activity could be accomplished without the full integration of all features. This paper addressed the challenges unique to delivering a fully integrated automated container terminal facility that will handle in excess of 3 million, 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) when all phases are complete.
