Joe Sullivan has joined USC’s Information Sciences Institute as Manager of Strategic Development.
Sullivan will work with ISI Executive Director Herb Schorr, Deputy Director Ron Ohlander and Associate Director Paul S. Rosenbloom on administration and strategic direction of the Institute, which is part of the University of Southern California School of Engineering.
Fuji-Xerox’s Invention-to-Innovation initiative leader is now part of the ISI strategic planning team.
He will also consult on strategic development of the ISI Distributed Scalable Systems Division with Division Director Robert Neches.
According to Rosenbloom, Sullivan will additionally be “getting involved in a range of new directions activities spanning ISI’s interests, divisions and campuses (East and West), as well as with interactions with groups outside of ISI. ”
Sullivan came to ISI from the Fuji Xerox Palo Alto Laboratory (FXPAL), where he has been working since 1996 on personal/mobile computing, technology innovation, and opportunities for IT in service businesses.
At Fuji Xerox, he launched an “Invention to Innovation” initiative to achieve return on research investment through development of innovative product concepts and relationships with the Silicon Valley entrepreneurial community.
Sullivan began his professional career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he studied intellectual development. Following several years at Harris Corporation working on human-computer interfaces, he moved to the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Center, where he spent ten years as a researcher and manager in computer-human interfaces, AI, and software technology and services (and won the Lockheed Continuous Improvement Leadership Award and the Program Manager of the Year Award).
Sullivan received his B.A., cum laude, from the University of Florida; a M.A. in Psychology from the University of Colorado; and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Kansas. He has co-edited two books, on Embodied Conversational Agents and Intelligent User Interfaces, has written numerous articles, and has nine patents either awarded or in process.
