On Friday February 3, 2017, the USC Viterbi welcomed a delegation of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar from Thuringia, Germany. Among the delegation of 13 was Dean Hans-Joachim Bargstädt, and Wolfgang Tiefensee, former Federal Minister for Transport, Building and Urban Development under Angela Merkel. Tiefensee is currently the State Minister of Economy, Science and the Digital Society. The visiting school’s delegation met with Viterbi admins, including Vice Dean Raghu Raghavendra to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that signifies the two schools working to “enlarge and broaden cooperation and establish collaboration on further academic and research related development activities”.
Some of these developments include increased collaboration in research, particularly in civil engineering, as well as exchange in scientific materials made available by both parties. Both universities will also sponsor cooperative seminars, workshops, and other scientific meetings on matters of mutual interest and exchange scholars in the course of academic development to address problems of scientific progress.
The core strength of this collaboration will be between the research and education between BUW’s and USC Viterbi’s Civil and Environmental Engineering departments.
“The academics in our delegation— rectors and presidents from universities of applied sciences in Schmalkalden and Jena, the international office from University of Jena, and the Vice Rector of University of Erfurt— were very pleased about the real content of all contributions and the lively presentations”. said Dean Hans.
As of late, the collaboration between the two Civil Engineering Departments are still underway. Lucio Soibelman, Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering Dept. looks forward to hosting Dean Hans this May.
