Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Qiang Huang has been elected as a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), honoring his extensive career in advanced manufacturing technologies.
ASME bestows the title of Fellow on members who have been made exceptional achievements and contributions to the engineering profession and to ASME.
Huang’s research has special emphasis on machine learning for additive manufacturing and integrated nanomanufacturing and nanoinformatics.
Huang was this year also elected Fellow of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) — the highest classification of IISE membership that recognizes outstanding leaders of the profession who have made significant, nationally-recognized contributions the field.
The Huang Lab develops fabrication-aware machine learning algorithms and computation-driven quality control tools to make 3D printing smarter — work that has been featured across numerous media outlets including IEEE Spectrum, Science Daily, and many more. In 2021, Huang and his collaborators were awarded the IEEE CASE Best Conference Paper Award in Lyon, France for their machine learning model to predict 3D printing accuracy.
Huang joined USC Viterbi Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in 2012, as Gordon S. Marshall Early Career Chair in Engineering, a role he held until 2016. He obtained his Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Huang’s research has been supported by National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Office of Naval Research. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award and has been an IEEE Senior Member since December 2016.
He is Department Editor for IISE Transactions and Associate Editor for ASME Transactions, Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering.
Huang has also served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering and for IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters.
