USC Viterbi’s online graduate program in computer information technology is one of the top 3 in the nation.
The USC Viterbi School of Engineering remains among the nation’s top online graduate programs in information technology (computer science) and engineering for 2021, per U.S. News & World Report (USNWR).
The annual U.S. News & World Report rankings, released today, surveys U.S. online computer science and engineering graduate programs and is based on quantitative data as well as reputation surveys by academics and professionals. The USC Viterbi School ranked No. 2 in computer science and No. 5 in overall engineering.
While some schools have only one online program, USC Viterbi has over 40 online master’s degrees and graduate certificates ranging from broad disciplines to niche programs delivered through its premier Distance Education Network (DEN@Viterbi). It offers master’s degrees in areas such as financial engineering, sustainable infrastructure systems, cybersecurity engineering and computer science.
“The DEN@Viterbi online delivery model has always had the on-campus student as part of its student audience,” said Binh Tran, associate dean of DEN@Viterbi. “Our blended online delivery model has served both the on-campus and online students for almost 20 years. Our model has thrived on collaborative tools for students and faculty – regardless of modality or location.”
With the onset of the COVID epidemic, as universities struggled to transition to online learning, DEN faculty were ready. Drawing from a wellspring of practical knowledge that comes from pioneering distance education innovations for the last 50 years, Tran and his DEN@Viterbi team provided additional instructional tools and collaboration systems to ease and enrich the online experience.
Students from around the world have completed their USC Viterbi graduate degrees remotely – while balancing work, life and family. Started in 1972, DEN@Viterbi has set the standards for distance education excellence. It is consistently ranked a top online graduate engineering program and top online graduate information technology (computer science) program by U.S. News & World Report.
“Every class I took as a DEN@Viterbi student gave me experiences that I’ve been able to immediately apply on the job,” said John Michael Ferrer, M.S. ’19, Product Development. Ferrer is currently putting his DEN degree to work as a systems design engineer at Ford Motor Company.
Coming to the aid of students impacted by the global pandemic, DEN@Viterbi also began rolling out free, online learning modules. The initiative, known as “Viterbi All Access” is aimed at providing current USC Viterbi engineering students as well as recent graduates with additional professional development opportunities.
“Through this initiative, we are leveraging our technical capabilities to support our students’ and graduates’ life-long learning and career advancement in this trying time,” said Kelly Goulis, USC Viterbi senior associate dean for admission and student engagement.
Modules offered focus on topics such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, neural networks, cryptography and data sciences, encompassing a variety of computer science disciplines as well as some less technical areas such as writing.
