AI/nsiders – ISI

Adam Russell, AI/nthropologist and Director of the AI Division at the USC Information Sciences Institute (ISI), is on a journey to help build a better world with AI. He interviews the ISI humans behind AI to understand what motivates them, how they shape AI today, and where they hope AI will go.

Jose-Luis Ambite, a principal scientist at ISI, discusses a recent AI social media trend that shocked him. He describes the benefits of federated learning for privacy, and what problems in the world he thinks it might solve. He shares the short story that influenced his view on AI and why others should read it as well. He explains his interest in the science of aging, and how he hopes he might be able to contribute. He explores why AI developing empathy is unlikely, but why it can still be useful in providing support for those who need it. Listen to his episode below.
