Yolanda Gil
Yolanda Gil has been named a Fellow the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s leading computing professional society.
The honor puts Gil in the top one percent of ACM’s 100,000 members. Fellows are selected by their peers at universities, corporations and research labs worldwide.
Gil was chosen “for leadership in advancing the use of artificial intelligence in support of science and for service to the community,” according to the ACM. As ISI’s director of knowledge technologies, her research spans knowledge capture, intelligent user interfaces, and social knowledge collection. She is well-known for her work on semantic metadata, provenance, and workflows. Target applications range from drug discovery and multi-omics to climate and ecosystems research.
She is also is an associate division director for ISI’s intelligent systems division, and is a research professor in the USC Viterbi computer science department. At Viterbi, Gil has been deeply involved in teaching courses on data science for non-CS students.
“This is an exceedingly well-deserved honor,” says Yigal Arens, director of ISI’s intelligent systems division. “We’re immensely proud of Yolanda’s selection, and appreciative of the dynamic, disciplined work she’s done over many years at ISI and USC. Yolanda’s achievements and determination are a model for all of us.”
The 53 Fellows named by the ACM hail from a dozen countries, include experts in data science, cloud computing, computer security, Internet routing and security, large-scale distributed computing, mobile computing, spoken-language processing and theoretical computer science. “The achievements of the 2016 ACM Fellows are accelerating the digital revolution,” wrote the ACM, “and affect almost every aspect of how we live and work today.”
ACM will formally recognize its 2016 Fellows at the annual Awards Banquet, to be held in San Francisco in June, 2017. Gil is also a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, and was elected its 24th president earlier this year.
